I have a web page that I'm developing called American-Family-Life.com that provides useful information and has affiliate links embedded within it. The latest page I added points towards car parts providers. Here's the index. Let's see if Google picks it up.

Well, my pages weren't ranking well in Google. I finally realized why... I didn't pay attention to what HTML was designed for. HTML has several special sections... Meta Tags with Keyword listws and descriptions, Title, Headings 1 - 6 and then of course, the core text. Google looks at this stuff and looks at the order in which text appears on a page.

Well, I was using a template that was created by using Xara Webstyle. Now Webstyle makes some beautiful looking templates. Want proof. Look at my home page. Nice looking. Wouldn't you agree?

Well, there's a problem with this page. It's created using CSS or Cascasing Style Sheets. CSS is a way to create some very precise web pages. But Google looks for the 'body' of an HLML document and basically starts at the beginning of the body. In the case of my Xara page, the body of the document starts in the menu on the left side of the page. The title works, but there are real problems with the way google, 'interprets' the page.

So, I redid my pages completely. They're ugly. (I'm working on it), but they should rank well in Google. The new versions of the pages are below. Let's see how they rank over time.....

I downloaded Microsofts beta of their Spyware Remover and I like it. I hate to say that, because I know it's going to eat into my little affiliate business selling spyware removers. But I must be honest, their solution looks pretty good.

Although the beta is free, I understand that when the product is released from beta, a subscription will have to be purchased to keep the spyware definition file up to date.

Hummmm. Spyware and Adware. It's a problem. I have a network consulting business and at least 90% of my calls are now things like, "My PC is running slow" or "My box keeps crashing" and the problem is almost always resolved by running some Spyware remover application. I won't lie, I sell some spyware removers through affiliate links on my web page, http://www.nontoxic-internet.com.

Look at this list of adware and spyware that I've put together... and it's not totally comprehensive. I think if I researched further, I'd be able to double or triple the list.

I first became aware of Adware when my sister complained about some weirdness that was happening with her computer. A few years back, she had cancer and during her recovery, she did a lot of research on cancer. Cures, medications, best courses of treatment. That sort of thing. Interestingly, the pop-up ads that would appear on her computer starting being about cancer treatments, cancer centers, medications, etc.

Turns out she had installed some Internet Explorerer Toolbar that was monitoring her search requests and directing targeted advertising in her direction. There's nothing really wrong with this I suppose. After all, wouldn't you rather view ads that are related to things that you are actually interested in? But it does mean that information about your surfing habits must be monitored and captured and I'm uncomfortable with that.

The problems I see lately are related to badly written software. One company has insisted that New.Net insisted that I remove references of their products from my web page and I did to keep the lawyers away, but I can tell you that their software is not well written. Here, look at a few of these pages on Google and you'll see what I'm talking about....

A friend last night called me because he downloaded a screen saver that he just couldn't live without (sucker) and he got New.Net installed on his PC as a result. (My advice, when downloading shareware, read the License Agreement very closely. Yes, it may put you to sleep, but it will also tell you if they are going to cause pop-ups, send ads, monitor surfing behavior, etc. Search for the word 'ad' or 'advertising'). Anyway, after he loaded this craplication (my name of a bad application), he could no longer connect to the Internet.

That's more common than you might expect.

Oh, here's a hint if you hate pop-ups. Get the Google Toolbar. It's free and it includes a pop-up stopper that works very well. You can get it here. It only takes about 2 minutes to pull down and it's a tool bar that you'd probably actually use!
